Susi      : Ya, tapi saya harus selesaikan surat ini dulu.

Doni      : Baiklah, apa Anda suka gado-gado?

Susi      : Ya, tapi saya lebih suka ketoprak. Saya jarang makan gado-gado. Bagaimana dengan

               Anda?

Doni      : Saya suka semua makanan Indonesia.

Susi      : Nanti kita makan dimana?

Doni      : Kita makan di kafe dekat sekolah itu. Kelihatannya makanan dan minuman disana sangat

              murah

Susi      : Baiklah.

Doni      : Omong-omong, dimana adik Anda? Saya tidak melihat dia.

Susi      : Oh, dia pergi ketika saya sedang masak di dapur. Mungkin dia bertemu dengan temannya.

Doni      : Oh begitu.

The conversation above discussed about the condition that happens right now and how to say to other people. Usually, you will hear about these sentence:

Saya Sedang Menulis Surat

  • Apa yang sedang Anda lakukan (What are you doing)
  • Saya sedang masak ayam goreng (I am cooking fried chicken)
  • The word sedang refers to the present continuous tense that in English use Verb-ing as the expression of present continuous, otherwise Indonesian language only use sedang before the verb. Sekarang is denoted as now that give the meaning the condition is happening right now.
  • Sudah or telah means already or as the expression of have just. But in this case, bahasa Indonesia always use sudah or telah as the denotation of past tense, the condition that has already happened in the past time. Usually, you can put the time signal such as kemarin (yesterday), sekarang (now), hari ini (today) if you want to emphasize the time.
  • Dia sudah pergi sejak dua jam yang lalu (She had already left since two hours ago)
  • Saya telah makan ( I have eaten)

Mostly people rarely say telah in daily conversation because the words telah sounds like the formal expression, so they always use sudah as the way to say telah.

Ok let’s talk about other information in bahasa Indonesia, have you ever heard about the word makan and makanan? or minum and minuman?

What do you think? What is the different of those words?

Ok, makan and minum has the function as verb otherwise makanan and minuman has the function as noun. So, what is this about? This is about the use of suffiex –an if you put it in the verb.

Suffix –an has the function to form noun from the verb. So if you put –an after verb, it will be:

  • The result of the action expressed by the root words
  • Masak —- Masakan (it means the food that is cooked)
  • Tulis —– Tulisan (means the writing that is written)
  • The object of the action expressed by the root words
  • Makan —– Makanan (the food that is eaten)
  • Pakai —– Pakaian (the clothes that is wore)

In the daily life, you also will hear about some of the conjunction that is always used in the sentence to express a condition. They are:

  • Ketika (When, this is the conjunction that is used to explain about the condition happen in the same time by different person for past time)

Example : Saya sedang masak di dapur ketika dia pergi ke kantor  ( I was cooking when he went to office)

  • Sambil (While, this is the conjunction that is used to express the same person doing the different activity in the same time)

Example : Saya membuat laporan sambil mendengar music ( I made report while listen the music)

So, is that easy? Of course it is easy, you only need to practice it in your daily activity with the people around you.
